At least 13 people were killed and several others injured after a private travel bus collided with a tipper lorry and caught fire in Andhra Pradesh’s Markapuram district early Thursday morning, triggering a large-scale rescue effort and prompting condolences from national and state leaders. The accident occurred around 6:00 am near Rayavaram when a bus operated by Harikrishna Travels was travelling from Nirmal in Telangana to Nellore. According to police officials, the impact of the collision was severe, and the bus caught fire within minutes, trapping several passengers inside. Many victims were reportedly burnt alive before emergency responders could reach the scene.
Initial reports suggested eight fatalities, but officials later confirmed that the number of deaths had risen to 13 as rescue teams cleared the wreckage and hospitals reported additional casualties. Around 18 to 20 injured passengers were rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment.
Markapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police Nagraju said emergency teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving distress calls. Fire personnel worked to douse the flames while police and locals attempted to break open windows and doors to rescue trapped passengers. However, the intensity of the blaze made rescue efforts extremely difficult.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives and announced financial assistance for the victims. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of those who died, while ₹50,000 will be given to those injured in the accident.
The Prime Minister also directed officials to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a detailed report into the cause of the crash. Authorities are expected to examine vehicle fitness, driver records, and road conditions.
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said he was deeply shocked by the incident and confirmed that he had sought details from district officials. He instructed authorities to ensure the injured receive the best possible medical care and assured that the government would support the families of the victims.
IT Minister Nara Lokesh also expressed grief, calling the incident extremely painful. He said directions had already been issued to provide proper treatment for the injured and assured that the state government would stand by the affected families.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also conveyed condolences and directed Telangana officials to coordinate with Andhra Pradesh authorities, as several passengers were believed to be from Telangana. He asked officials to ensure that victims receive immediate medical attention and logistical support.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the crash. Officials will examine whether overspeeding, driver fatigue, mechanical failure, or road conditions contributed to the accident. Forensic teams are also expected to inspect the burnt vehicle to determine how the fire spread so quickly.
