“Who Is Trump to Stop a War?”: Opposition Questions PM’s Silence on Ceasefire Claim

Published:

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday questioned U.S involvement in Operation sindoor. He questioned the Indian government over repeated claims made by US President Donald Trump, who has now said 25 times that he stopped a war between India and Pakistan.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament, Gandhi said,

“Who is Trump to get a ceasefire done? It’s not his job. But the Prime Minister hasn’t said a single word about it. That’s the truth—and he cannot hide it.”

Trump’s Bold Claim: “I Stopped a Nuclear War”

In a now widely circulated statement, Trump claimed he played a key role in stopping a potential war between India and Pakistan, alleging that five planes were shot down and that tensions were escalating toward nuclear conflict.

🟡 Trump said:

“They were probably going to end up in a nuclear war… They shot down five planes… I called them and said no more trade if you do this. Who knows where that would have ended up—and I stopped it.”

“Something Is Fishy”: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi linked Trump’s remarks to broader concerns about Operation Sindoor, India’s recent military operation following the Pahalgam terror attack. He said the government was avoiding a discussion in Parliament and questioned the mixed messaging.

“On one hand, they say Operation Sindoor is ongoing. On the other, they claim victory. Now Trump is saying he stopped it—there’s clearly something fishy,” he said.
“‘Kuch na kuch toh daal mein kala hai,’” Gandhi added, using a common Hindi phrase that suggests suspicion.

He also accused the government of weakening India’s global image.

“They’ve destroyed our foreign policy. No one supported us post Operation Sindoor.”

Jairam Ramesh Slams Government’s Silence

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh also weighed in, criticising the Modi government for not scheduling a proper debate in Parliament on Pahalgam–Sindoor and for not having the PM respond directly to Trump’s remarks.

Jairam Ramesh posted on X:

“Trump has trumpeted 25 times in 73 days, but our Prime Minister remains silent—only finding time to travel abroad and destabilise democratic institutions at home.”

Kharge Calls It “Humiliating”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed these sentiments in the Rajya Sabha, calling Trump’s repeated remarks “humiliating for the country.” He demanded the PM’s direct clarification in Parliament.

According to Gandhi, the government has agreed to discuss Operation Sindoor after PM Modi returns from his foreign visits.

 What’s the Debate About?

  • Trump has claimed, multiple times, that he prevented a full-blown war between India and Pakistan.

  • The Opposition is demanding answers—not just about Trump’s comments, but about India’s internal defence operations.

  • The government has yet to issue an official response, either denying or confirming the former US president’s version of events.

With each repetition of Trump’s claim, political pressure is mounting at home. As India juggles external diplomacy and internal accountability, the demand for clarity from the highest levels of government is only growing louder.
