9 Killed in Pune’s Jejuri-Morgaon Road Crash; PM, State Leaders Mourn

A devastating road accident on the Jejuri–Morgaon Road in Pune district claimed nine lives, including a six-year-old child, in a tragic collision between a speeding car and a pickup tempo on Wednesday.

According to officials, the high-speed vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a pickup truck that was parked outside a local hotel. The impact was so severe that the car also collided with another vehicle nearby.

The accident occurred when the hotel staff was unloading a refrigerator from a parked pickup tempo. At that moment, a car carrying six passengers veered off the road and rammed into the pickup.

“While the fridge was being taken out, a speeding car carrying six people veered off the road and rammed into the pick-up truck,”
said Tanaji Barade, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural.

Who Were the Victims?

The deceased have been identified as:

  1. Somnath Ramchandra Wayse (Nazare, Purandar) – Hotel owner at the accident site

  2. Ramu Sanjivan Yadav (Nazare, Purandar)

  3. Ajaykumar Chavan (Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh)

  4. Ajit Ashok Jadhav (Kanjale, Bhor)

  5. Kiran Bharat Raut (Pawarwadi, Indapur)

  6. Santosh Aisar (Nangnapur, Solapur)

  7. Akshay Shankar Raut (Zhargadwai, Baramati)

  8. Sarthak Kiran Raut, a 6-year-old child

  9. One person remains unidentified

Among the victims, Wayse was the hotel owner and had been helping unload the refrigerator at the time of the crash.

Leaders React with Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief via X and announced financial assistance:

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune, Maharashtra. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”
Ex-gratia: ₹2 lakh to the families of each deceased; ₹50,000 for the injured.

State Leaders Respond

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, also the guardian minister of Pune district and MLA from Baramati, said:

“The incident of the death of some people in a horrific accident involving a car and a pickup tempo on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune is very unfortunate and painful. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. I express my condolences to their families. The injured in this accident are undergoing treatment in the hospital and I pray for their speedy recovery.”

Baramati MP Supriya Sule also issued a heartfelt statement:

“This incident is very sad and unfortunate. Heartfelt condolences to the citizens who died in this. We all share in the grief that has befallen their families.”

The injured are currently being treated at local hospitals. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause and circumstances of the crash.
