In a landmark decision, the Himachal Pradesh government has introduced a 60-day special maternity leave for female government employees who suffer a stillbirth or the loss of a newborn. This compassionate move, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, aims to give grieving mothers the time and space to heal—both physically and emotionally.
Losing a child is an unimaginable tragedy, and the government’s decision acknowledges the deep trauma such an event can bring. By offering paid leave, Himachal Pradesh is setting a powerful example of empathy in the workplace.
The initiative was approved during a recent Cabinet meeting, where officials recognized the urgent need for such a policy. Alongside this, the government has also recommended holding the Budget session of the Vidhan Sabha from March 10 to March 28, 2025, to discuss key legislative and welfare measures.
This bold step has been widely appreciated and is expected to encourage other states to adopt similar compassionate policies, reinforcing the need for workplaces that prioritize both professional and personal well-being.
