Wikipedia Co-Founder Asks Elon Musk to Investigate U.S. Government’s Role in Editing the Platform

Published:

Larry Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia, has urged Elon Musk to investigate whether the U.S. government is paying employees to edit, monitor, or influence content on the online encyclopedia. His request has sparked a fresh debate about Wikipedia’s neutrality and the role of government in shaping online information.

Sanger’s Call for an Investigation

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Sanger directly appealed to Musk, asking him to look into whether any government agencies are involved in editing or lobbying on Wikipedia. He suggested that if such activities exist, they should be defunded immediately.

Sanger also called on President Donald Trump to issue an executive order that would prevent federal employees from using government time or resources to edit Wikipedia. Expressing his strong stance, he added, “I voted for you.”

Elon Musk’s Involvement

Musk, who leads the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has previously criticized Wikipedia for being biased. In a past incident, he even offered a $1 billion donation to Wikipedia if it agreed to change its name to “Dickipedia” for one year. While the proposal was made in jest, it highlighted Musk’s long-standing concerns about the platform’s reliability.

Wikipedia’s Alleged Bias

Sanger, who left Wikipedia in 2002, has been a vocal critic of its editorial policies. He claims that over time, Wikipedia has moved away from its original neutrality and become a tool for political propaganda. He argues that the site now leans toward progressive and leftist viewpoints, affecting the way information is presented to the public.

Is the U.S. Government Really Editing Wikipedia?

So far, there is no solid proof that government agencies have been systematically editing Wikipedia to influence public opinion. However, Wikipedia discourages undisclosed editing by people with affiliations and asks contributors to declare any conflicts of interest.

While concerns about bias and influence on Wikipedia are not new, Sanger’s recent call for an investigation has brought the issue back into the spotlight. With Musk and Trump now involved in the discussion, this debate is likely to continue, raising questions about the credibility and control of online information.
