A 22-year-old master’s student from Paruvai village in Tiruppur district was found dead under suspicious circumstances, prompting police to launch a murder investigation.
The young woman, who was studying at a government college in Coimbatore, was reportedly in a relationship for the past three years with Venmani, a fellow student from Vijayapuram. According to initial reports, Venmani had recently approached the woman’s family to propose marriage formally, but the family is said to have disapproved.
On March 30, while the student’s parents, Dandapani and Thangamani, were away at a local temple, they returned home to find their daughter lifeless, with a head injury and a fallen cupboard nearby. Instead of notifying authorities, the family allegedly buried the body the same day in a nearby cemetery without informing police.
Raising suspicion over the sudden burial and injury marks, Venmani approached the Kamanayakkanpalayam police, expressing doubts about the nature of her death. Following his complaint, forensic teams collected fingerprints and physical evidence from the house. Police have now registered a case of suspected murder.
Officials plan to exhume the body in the presence of the Revenue Commissioner for a post-mortem. Investigators are probing whether the woman was murdered for resisting family pressure or opposing their decision, with efforts made to stage the scene as a domestic accident.
The case has stirred debate around honour-based violence and parental control in relationships. Investigations are ongoing.
