New Delhi: Messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Meta, faced a temporary outage on Saturday evening. Several users across India reported issues while sending messages or uploading their status updates.
According to DownDetector, a platform that tracks online service disruptions, over 590 users had registered complaints by 5:22 PM IST. Most issues—around 85%—were related to message delivery failures, 12% reported general app malfunctions, and 3% faced login problems.
#WhatsAppDown Trends on Social Media
As users began facing difficulties, many took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the issue.
“Is it just me or is WhatsApp down again? Status upload is taking forever,” one user wrote.
Another added, “I thought my phone update caused the issue, but turns out it’s a platform-wide glitch.”
Users also noted slow or failed message delivery in group chats and status uploads. Some users reported similar disruptions on other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and Instagram, though no official statement from Meta was released at the time of reporting.
No Official Word Yet from Meta
This marks the second major outage in just over a month. In February 2025, WhatsApp experienced a more extensive global disruption affecting messaging, calls, and WhatsApp Web access.
The latest disruption occurred alongside a brief outage on UPI (Unified Payments Interface) platforms like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm, with users experiencing transaction failures. The NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) later confirmed this was due to “intermittent technical issues.”
WhatsApp’s Reach in India
With over 530 million users in India alone, WhatsApp is one of the country’s most widely used communication platforms, making any outage impactful across personal and professional networks.
