As summer heat sets in, it’s not just humans who feel the heat—our four-legged friends need special care too. On National Pet Day 2025, let’s celebrate the bond with our pets by making sure they’re comfortable, clean, and protected during the hottest months of the year.
Dr. Swathi Hareendran, Head Veterinarian at Supertails+ Clinic, shares expert advice on how summer grooming isn’t just about looking good—it’s key to your dog’s health and happiness.
“Grooming helps regulate body temperature, prevent skin infections, and detect early signs of discomfort,” says Dr. Swathi.
🛁 Summer Grooming Tips for Your Dog
1. Baths—But Not Too Often
A good bath helps control excess oil, reduce tick and flea infestations, and manage body odour. But overbathing can dry out your dog’s skin.
✅ Ideal frequency: Once every 2–4 weeks using dog-safe shampoos.
2. Brush Before You Bathe
Brushing removes loose hair, dirt, and tangles—making bath time smoother. For double-coated breeds, brushing helps improve airflow and keeps them cooler.
3. Trim, Don’t Shave
It might be tempting to give your dog a “summer cut,” but shaving can damage their natural insulation. Instead, opt for a light trim to remove bulk while protecting their skin.
❗ Avoid full-body shaving unless advised by a vet.
4. Ear Care Matters
Summer fun often means splashing in water—but wet ears can lead to infections, especially in dogs with floppy ears.
✅ Use a vet-recommended ear cleaner weekly, and always dry ears after swimming.
5. Paw Protection is a Must
Hot pavements can burn your dog’s paws.
🐾 Test the ground with your hand before walks.
✅ Use paw balms, avoid walking during peak heat, and trim fur around paw pads to prevent debris buildup.
🐶 Your Dog Deserves a Chill Summer Too
From playful pool dips to lazy afternoon naps, summer can still be enjoyable for your dog—with the right care. So this National Pet Day, go beyond treats and belly rubs. Show your love with grooming that keeps your pup cool, clean, and carefree.
