World’s Best Airport Gets Bigger: Changi Terminal 5 Is Underway

Published:

Singapore’s Changi Airport — often called the world’s best

This week, the country officially broke ground on Terminal 5, a long-awaited expansion designed not just to manage more flyers but to completely reimagine the airport experience. The ceremony was led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on May 14, marking the beginning of a bold new chapter in aviation, one that promises to blend technology, sustainability, and the warm soul of Singapore into a single roof.

“Mega yet cozy,” is how Yam Kum Weng, CEO of Changi Airport Group, described it — a space where “personalized, stress-free, and positively surprising” travel becomes the norm.

A Terminal for Tomorrow, Not Just Today

Originally planned for 2020 but delayed due to the pandemic, Terminal 5 is now set to open in the mid-2030s — and it has adapted with the times.

Key futuristic features:

  • Pandemic-ready ventilation systems

  • Biometric-only entry points

  • Leaf-like layered roofing for air circulation and modular isolation during outbreaks

  • Autonomous baggage handling and AI assistants

The design ensures that the terminal can easily segment areas in case of future health emergencies, proving that this is more than just an infrastructure upgrade — it’s resilience built in steel and smart systems.

✈️ Not Just a Terminal, a Microcity

While most airports focus on speed and functionality, T5 aims to feel like a miniature city, one rooted in Singapore’s lush greenery and global character.

The terminal will become the new hub for Singapore Airlines and Scoot, centralizing operations that are currently spread across multiple terminals.

International design firm Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) is part of the design team, and their vision is clear:

“T5 is a vibrant microcity that is distinctly Singaporean — lush, layered, and deeply human,” said Trent Tesch, KPF’s head designer. “Efficiency and experience are not mutually exclusive.”

🌿 Climate-Smart & Future-Forward13 things travellers love about Changi Airport

Built with Singapore’s tropical weather in mind, the terminal will feature:

  • Rooftop solar panels that generate enough electricity to power 20,000 four-room flats annually

  • Smart cooling systems that reduce environmental impact

  • A modular layout that enhances adaptability and comfort

Why People Love Changi (and Will Love T5 Even More)

13 things travellers love about Changi Airport

Already famous for its gardens, movie theaters, rooftop pools, and even a 10-story indoor waterfall, Changi Airport is more than a gateway — it’s a destination.

T5 will continue this tradition, bringing greenery, play, and peace into an environment that travelers often associate with queues and delays.

With over 68 million passengers passing through last year and direct connections to 170 cities, Singapore’s airport is a global superhub. And with Terminal 5, it’s now preparing for the next 100 million — but doing it with heart, innovation, and the soul of a city that always looks forward.

Changi isn’t just building a terminal. It’s building the future of flight. ✈️🌱
