Restored Uncut Version of Sholay to Premiere in Italy; Amitabh & Dharmendra React

India’s most iconic film, Sholay, is set to make a grand return — this time on a global stage. To mark its 50th anniversary, a fully restored, uncut version of the film will have its world premiere at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy, on June 27. The open-air screening at Piazza Maggiore will give international audiences a rare glimpse of the film in its original form, including scenes that were previously cut.

🎬 A Landmark Film, Restored

Directed by Ramesh Sippy and originally released in 1975, Sholay became a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its unforgettable characters, dramatic storytelling, and iconic dialogues written by Salim–Javed.

The new restoration is the result of a three-year collaboration between the Film Heritage Foundation and Sippy Films Pvt Ltd, with support from international archives in Mumbai, London, and technical help from experts in Italy and the British Film Institute. This version includes the original ending and deleted scenes, bringing fans the most complete version ever seen — in a newly restored 2.2:1 aspect ratio with enhanced sound and visuals.

🎥 Amitabh Bachchan: “A watershed for Indian cinema”

Reflecting on the film’s legacy, Amitabh Bachchan said:

“Some things in life remain permanently etched in your mind. Sholay is one such film. Shooting it was unforgettable, but at the time, I had no idea it would become a watershed moment for Indian cinema.”

He recalled the emotional journey — from the film initially being deemed a box office failure, to eventually breaking records and making history.

“It’s wonderful that the original ending and lost scenes have been restored. I hope Sholay continues to capture imaginations 50 years later — across the world.”

🎭 Dharmendra: “Sholay is the 8th wonder of the world”

Veteran actor Dharmendra, who played the spirited Veeru, also expressed his joy:

Sholay is the 8th wonder of the world. I’m thrilled it’s being restored. So many scenes are etched into history. Every character became a star — but the real hero was the coin!”

Interestingly, Dharmendra revealed that he was offered the roles of Gabbar and Thakur but chose Veeru because the character matched his own personality.

“I had so much fun on set. The tanki scene, the temple, and Jai’s death — those moments are unforgettable.”

📽️ A Tribute Beyond Borders

The restoration isn’t just about nostalgia — it’s about preserving Indian cinematic heritage for global audiences. As the Sholay legacy turns 50, this historic screening offers a rare opportunity for new generations to experience the film as it was meant to be seen.
