Kolkata Law College Gangrape Case: 3 Arrested, Protests Erupt, Political Links Found

A serious crime has shocked Kolkata: a female law college student was gangraped inside her college in South Kolkata on June 25.

Police have arrested three men — two are senior students, and the third is a former student who is also a lawyer and linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) student wing. He had been working temporarily as non-teaching staff at the same college.

The crime happened inside a guard room next to the student union office. According to the police, the attackers also recorded a video of the assault and threatened to leak it if the girl spoke out. The survivor filed a complaint, and the police have sealed two rooms inside the college and are collecting CCTV footage.

All three accused were arrested from Talbagan and are now in five-day police custody. Their phones have been taken for investigation.

The incident triggered widespread protests outside the Kasba police station, with Congress and student groups demanding justice. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused the ruling party of shielding the accused, saying,

“The TMC is protecting such predators. Crimes against women are rising even with a woman Chief Minister at the helm.”

The police had to remove the protestors forcibly from the site.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice and asked for a fast and fair investigation. The victim has undergone medical tests, and her clothes have been sent for forensic testing. The incident exposes a dangerous nexus of political influence, institutional negligence, and digital threats. One accused is linked to the ruling party’s student wing and worked as temporary staff in the college. The crime took place inside campus premises, was filmed, and used to blackmail the victim, highlighting serious lapses in security and rising concerns about women’s safety in educational spaces.

This incident comes shortly after the murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata and has raised serious concerns about the safety of women in the state.
