Kashmir’s iconic Dal Lake is set to make waves, quite literally, as it prepares to host the first-ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival from August 21 to 23. The scenic lake will be transformed into a high-energy venue for water sports, drawing over 400 athletes from 36 states and union territories.
This landmark event is being organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the J&K Sports Council, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Dragon Boat Association.
🚣♂️ Dragon Boats Make a Grand Entry

The spotlight of the festival is on dragon boat racing, a vibrant and competitive sport where teams paddle long boats decorated with dragon heads, driven forward by the rhythmic beating of a drum. The event received a major boost with the arrival of three modern dragon boats, donated by the Delhi Dragon Boat Association.
J&K already has a strong presence in the sport, with six international-level players. Notably, Zahoor Ahmad Latoo and Zain Ul Aabidin brought home gold medals from the 2023 IDBF World Championship in Thailand.
“The introduction of dragon boat events will inspire youth, nurture fresh talent, and strengthen J&K’s sporting identity,” said Mohammed Syed Punoo, President of the J&K Dragon Boat Association and retired IPS officer.
🏆 More Than Just Boats
The festival will feature three medal events: rowing, canoeing, and kayaking. In addition, spectators will witness demonstrations of water skiing, shikara sprint, and dragon boat races.
“Dragon boat racing is a distinct sport recognized globally. It is part of the Asian Games and is governed by the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF),” added Aamir Ali, Vice President of the J&K Dragon Boat Association.
🌊 Why It Matters
This festival not only showcases India’s growing enthusiasm for water sports but also marks Kashmir’s emergence as a premier sporting destination. The initiative under Khelo India aims to build grassroots infrastructure, boost local talent, and place J&K on the global sporting map.
