OpenAI to Set Up First India Office in Delhi as User Base Soars

Published:

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced on Friday that it will open its first India office in New Delhi later this year, further strengthening its presence in what is now its second-largest market after the US.

The exact location of the office has not been disclosed, but OpenAI has already registered a legal entity in the country and begun hiring a local team. This team will work closely with governments, businesses, developers, academic institutions, and other partners.

“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for the company, with ChatGPT’s weekly active users more than quadrupling over the past year. The country also ranks among the top five developer markets for OpenAI and has the largest student community using ChatGPT worldwide.

As part of its India push, OpenAI will host its first Education Summit in August and later in the year hold Developer Day, bringing together startups, enterprises, and developers driving the AI ecosystem.

Highlighting India’s potential, Altman said: “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. The country has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader — world-class tech talent, a thriving developer community, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”

To tap into this user base, OpenAI has also launched an India-specific subscription plan, ChatGPT Go, priced at ₹399 per month with integrated UPI payment support.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, saying: “OpenAI’s decision reflects India’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is well-positioned to lead the next wave of AI-driven transformation.”

Local businesses and institutions across India are already using OpenAI’s tools in diverse areas, including AI-powered agricultural services, recruitment processes, and governance solutions.
