Vadodara police on Tuesday detained three persons, including a minor, for allegedly throwing eggs at a Ganesh procession on Panigate Mandvi Road in the early hours of the morning.
According to officials, two adults accused — both from another community — have been booked under sections related to hurting religious sentiments, defiling idols with intent to insult, and causing injuries. For the minor, proceedings have been initiated under the Juvenile Justice Act as a “Child in Conflict with Law (CCL).”
Joint Commissioner of Police (Vadodara City) Dr. Leena Patil said the incident occurred between 2:30 am and 3:00 am when a Ganesh pandal procession from Manjalpur was passing near the City Police station. Eggs were allegedly thrown at the procession, some hitting the idol and even injuring participants.
“The organisers immediately informed the City Police station. Teams from the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Special Operations Group (SOG), and local police reached the spot within minutes, which helped prevent any major law-and-order situation. An FIR was lodged at the City Police station under sections related to hurting religious sentiments, defiling idols, and provoking breach of peace,” Patil said.
Police teams later scanned CCTV footage, collected clues through human and technical sources, and identified the accused within hours. All three are residents of the city’s old area.
“They will be interrogated thoroughly. If more names come up, they will be booked, and other sections may also be added,” Patil added.
