Torrential overnight rainfall and a suspected cloudburst in Dehradun triggered flash floods on Tuesday, causing the Tamsa river to overflow and inundate several parts of the city, including the historic Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple.
River Swells, Temple Submerged
The sudden surge in water levels flooded the cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, with water flowing over the Shivling and washing debris into the sanctum. Videos circulating on social media showed heavy currents sweeping through the premises. Nearby shops, hotels, and commercial establishments suffered extensive damage.
Missing Persons and Property Loss
Two individuals were reported missing in the Sahastradhara area, though officials suspect they may have taken shelter elsewhere. Several roads were blocked, the Maldevta bridge was washed away, and debris piled up near the IT Park, disrupting movement across the city. Power supply was also affected in parts of Dehradun.
Red Alert and School Closures
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Dehradun and surrounding districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Schools in the city were ordered shut as a precautionary measure.
Government Response
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held an emergency review and assured that relief operations were underway. Teams from the SDRF, fire services, and local administration have been deployed, although access to some affected areas remains difficult due to road blockages.
Wider Impact
Authorities have urged residents living along the Tamsa, Tons, and Song rivers to remain cautious. Heavy rains have also impacted Rishikesh and Mussoorie, with reports of waterlogging and landslides in hilly areas.
The situation continues to be closely monitored, with officials warning of further rainfall over the next 24 hours.
