A routine overnight journey from Hyderabad to Bengaluru turned into a nightmare of flames and chaos when a private sleeper bus caught fire near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, claiming at least 20 lives, including that of a motorcyclist. What followed were scenes of panic, heroism, and heartbreak as survivors recounted how the inferno engulfed the vehicle within minutes.
How the Tragedy Unfolded
The multi-axle sleeper AC bus belonging to V Kaveri Travels was carrying 44 passengers when the accident occurred around 3 a.m. on National Highway 44, near Chinnatekur village in Kallur mandal, on the outskirts of Kurnool city.
According to police reports and survivor statements, the bus rammed into a two-wheeler, causing the motorcycle to get trapped beneath it. The impact ruptured the bus’s fuel tank, sparking an explosion that instantly spread flames throughout the vehicle.
Most passengers, fast asleep at the time, woke up to suffocating smoke and intense heat. Only a handful managed to break windows and escape before the fire consumed the bus completely.
The Toll of Flames
Authorities have confirmed 20 fatalities, including the motorcyclist. Another 12 passengers sustained injuries, some with severe burns. The bodies were so charred that forensic teams are now conducting DNA testing for identification.
District Collector A Siri stated that the fire was so intense that the entire bus burned down to its frame within minutes. “It was one of the most devastating accidents in recent years,” she said.
Case Filed: Drivers Under Scrutiny
Police have registered a case of negligence and overspeeding against the two drivers of the vehicle based on a complaint from survivor N. Ramesh, who accused them of reckless driving.
According to Ramesh, locals at the scene reported that the bus was speeding and dragged the motorcycle for nearly 200 metres, causing sparks that ignited the fuel.
One of the drivers, Lakshmaiah, reportedly fled the scene. The second driver, Siva Narayana (30), who had taken over earlier in the night, is now in custody for questioning.
Driver’s Flip-Flop Adds Mystery
In a puzzling turn, Siva Narayana has allegedly changed his statement multiple times. Initially, he claimed that heavy rain and poor visibility caused the bus to collide with the bike. Later, he stated that the motorcycle was already lying on the road due to a previous mishap and that the bus unknowingly drove over it, triggering the explosion.
Investigators are now examining CCTV footage and GPS tracking data to verify the sequence of events.
The Bus Had a History of Violations
Records show that the ill-fated bus had multiple traffic challans issued by Telangana police for dangerous driving and unauthorised parking. However, it did possess a valid All India permit and fitness certificate.
Officials are probing whether mechanical failure or previous safety lapses contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Stories of Survival and Loss
Among the survivors, N. Ramesh recounted how he managed to escape by breaking the bus window, pulling his wife and children out before the flames spread. “The emergency exit was jammed. People were shouting, crying for help we could do nothing,” he said.
Tragically, Ramesh’s close friend G. Ramesh and his family wife Anushka and two children perished in the inferno. Both families had boarded the same bus to attend a family event in Bengaluru.
A Painful Reminder
This is the second major bus fire on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru route in recent memory. In October 2013, 45 passengers lost their lives in a similar fire near Mahbubnagar district.
The latest tragedy raises pressing questions on safety checks, driver accountability, and the enforcement of private transport regulations in India.
The Road Ahead
Authorities have ordered a comprehensive investigation into the Kurnool bus fire, focusing on vehicle safety compliance, driver fatigue, and emergency exit standards.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, currently in Dubai, expressed grief over the incident and assured assistance to the victims’ families. “This tragedy must serve as a wake-up call for stricter safety enforcement,” he said.
As charred remains are identified and survivors recount their trauma, one question continues to echo across Kurnool could this horror have been prevented?
