Cyclone Montha: Life Disrupted Across Vizianagaram and Srikakulam as Heavy Rains Lash Region

Published:

Normal life came to a standstill in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts as Cyclone Montha unleashed heavy rains and strong winds along the north coastal Andhra Pradesh region on Monday. The cyclonic storm, which is expected to make landfall near Kakinada by Tuesday evening (October 28, 2025), has already caused damage to standing crops, rural roads, and low-lying areas.

With continuous downpour and gusty winds battering the region, most residents preferred to stay indoors. Connectivity across major routes, including Bobbili–Parvathipuram and adjoining areas, was severely affected as road conditions deteriorated due to flooding and debris.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Vizianagaram district alone recorded 47.7 mm of rainfall since Monday morning, with all 27 mandals reporting excess precipitation under the cyclone’s influence.

District authorities have intensified relief operations and are closely monitoring the situation. Minister for MSME Kondapalli Srinivas and District Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy have been overseeing operations from the emergency control room set up at the Collectorate. “The administration is fully prepared to handle potential flooding as inflows into reservoirs such as Madduvalasa and Andhra continue to rise,” officials stated.

In Srikakulam, officials reported that the situation remained under control despite persistent heavy rain. Special Officer K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu and in-charge Collector Farman Ahmad Khan confirmed that all precautionary measures were in place along the coastline. The Gotta Barrage on the Vamsadhara River received an inflow of 10,500 cusecs, while 10,815 cusecs of water were discharged early Tuesday morning to prevent overflow.

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid venturing near riverbanks and coastal zones until the storm weakens. With reservoirs filling rapidly and road connectivity disrupted, district administrations are on high alert to manage any emergency evacuations or relief measures in the coming hours.
