WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature called Group Message History, designed to make it easier for users joining an existing group chat to catch up on recent conversations. The update allows admins and, in some cases, members to share between 25 and 100 previous messages with new participants offering context without overwhelming them with an entire chat archive.
The feature addresses a long-standing friction point in group messaging: the awkwardness of joining mid-conversation. Whether it’s a family group, a workplace coordination thread or a community discussion, new members often struggle to understand what has already been discussed. Until now, that usually meant someone manually forwarding screenshots, copying text blocks or summarising past messages.

How the Feature Works
When a new member is added to a group, the person adding them can choose to share a selected number of recent messages anywhere from 25 to 100. These shared messages appear in a visually distinct format within the chat, clearly separating historical content from live discussion.
Importantly, when message history is shared, the entire group is notified. The notification includes timestamps and sender details, reinforcing transparency and ensuring that everyone knows which messages have been forwarded to the new participant.
This approach prevents confusion over whether content is new or previously sent. It also ensures that no private back-channel sharing takes place without group awareness.
WhatsApp has confirmed that the feature remains protected by end-to-end encryption, consistent with the platform’s broader privacy commitments. Only group members can access the shared content, and the messages cannot be viewed outside the encrypted chat environment.
Admin Controls and User Permissions
Administrators retain primary control over the feature. They can disable Group Message History entirely for their group if they prefer not to allow any past messages to be shared with newcomers.
However, even if disabled for regular members, admins can still choose to share history themselves when adding someone. This layered permission system reflects WhatsApp’s broader strategy of giving group admins greater governance authority.
In groups where the feature is enabled, regular members who add new participants can also send message history unless the admin has restricted this ability.
