Ajit Pawar Pushes for Separate Municipal Corporations in Hinjewadi, Chakan, and Phursungi

Pune: To address mounting infrastructure challenges in Pune’s fast-growing suburbs, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has announced plans to create three new municipal corporations for Hinjewadi, Chakan, and Phursungi.

Speaking in Chakan on Friday after reviewing ongoing road works, Pawar said,

“There is a need to create a separate municipal corporation for the area covering Uruli Devachi, Phursungi, Loni Kalbhor, and Wagholi. Similarly, a separate municipal corporation is needed for Hinjewadi and surrounding areas, and another for the Chakan area. I will get them done.”

Why the Push for New Corporations?

  • Traffic Congestion: Both the industrial hub of Chakan and the IT powerhouse Hinjewadi have been facing severe traffic bottlenecks. In recent months, congestion in Hinjewadi sparked a public uproar and an online campaign by residents and software professionals demanding better civic management.

  • Urbanisation Pressure: Phursungi and Loni Kalbhor have seen rapid population growth, putting immense strain on existing civic infrastructure.

  • Monsoon Woes: This year’s rains worsened the situation, causing power outages and disrupting services in several residential and commercial pockets.

What Will Change?

Upgrading these villages to municipal corporations would bring:

  • Wider roads and improved traffic management.

  • Greater civic manpower to handle growing demands.

  • Planned infrastructure development for a rising population.

Political Backing

The demand for smaller, more focused civic bodies is not new. BJP minister Chandrakant Patil, who served as Pune’s Guardian Minister earlier, had raised the issue in 2022 and again in 2024. He argued:

“It is practically difficult to meet the civic needs of a larger area by a single municipal corporation with limited manpower. It makes sense to create separate municipal corporations to fulfil such needs.”
