India is a land of festivals. Every celebration carries deep religious and cultural significance, but festivals also provide a powerful boost to the economy. One such important festival is Ganeshotsav. Celebrated with devotion and grandeur, this festival not only strengthens people’s faith but also propels the economy forward.
“When Lord Ganesha comes home, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi too enters — bringing both devotion and prosperity.” said a shopkeeper at Sancheti Puja Saman Bhandar on NDA Road,
The bustling crowd at his shop, buying coconuts, durva grass, flowers, and decorations, perfectly illustrated his words.
That is the unique power of Ganeshotsav — along with faith, it fuels economic activity. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), Ganeshotsav generates over ₹25,000 crore in economic turnover every year. From puja essentials, decoration materials, sweets, fruits, flowers, transportation, event management, to tourism — multiple sectors witness a massive surge in trade during these ten days.
The market for Ganesh idols alone is worth over ₹500 crore annually. Thousands of artisans across the country work tirelessly for months to sculpt idols for the festival. This year, there has been a notable rise in demand for eco-friendly idols.
“For us flower sellers, the income during these ten days is much more than the rest of the year,” said Karuna Kale, a flower vendor from Sinhgad Road, Pune.
Public processions, cultural events, and grand pandal decorations together create nearly a ₹5,000 crore market for event management. Specialized companies handle sound systems, lighting, security, and crowd control. On top of this, municipal bodies like Pune Municipal Corporation see increased demand for services like artificial immersion tanks, waste collection, and anti-plastic drives.
Ganeshotsav also boosts tourism. Cities like Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur attract thousands of visitors eager to witness famous Ganesh mandals and cultural programs. This benefits local hotels, restaurants, and transport services.
Ganeshotsav, therefore, is not just a festival of faith and devotion, but also a major driver of the economy. For artisans, flower vendors, sweet makers, sound and light technicians, and transport operators, the festival opens doors to significant financial opportunities.
When “Bappa” arrives, brings joy into households — and at the same time, gives momentum to the economy.
