AR Rahman recently shared his experience of working with the iconic Lata Mangeshkar, paying tribute to her legacy during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
Speaking at the “Lata Mangeshkar Memorial Talk: Musical Theatre in India” at the 55th IFFI, the Oscar-winning composer honoured the legendary singer and her extraordinary contributions to Indian cinema. Rahman reminisced about the high standards she upheld and her immense dedication to her craft.
During the session, Rahman shared his collaboration with Lata Mangeshkar for a song from Kapil Sibal’s album in 2014. He recounted, “She came to Chennai for a song, and we spent some time together. It’s quite difficult to earn her praise because she set such high standards of perfection. While she was there, she was surprised and curious about the small room and what was happening inside.”
Rahman also recalled an incident that highlighted her commitment: “In 2014, I worked on Kapil Sibal ji’s album. She wasn’t well, but I waited three months for her to record the songs, which were completed quickly. For one song, she had some apprehensions. She flew all the way from LA to record it. However, at the studio, she didn’t feel well (laughs) and had to leave.”
He concluded by praising her beyond her vocal talent: “Her dedication, sacrifice, and the aura she carried continue to inspire us all.”
The 55th IFFI in Goa, which began on November 20, is showcasing a lineup of 180 international films from 81 countries. This year’s festival features 16 world premieres, 3 international premieres, 43 Asian premieres, and 109 Indian premieres. IFFI Goa is scheduled to conclude on November 28, 2024.
