For the first time since 2014, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has revised bus fares for passengers across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the PMRDA region. The new fare structure is aimed at simplifying travel, enhancing efficiency, and preparing for integration with future metro services.
What’s Changed?
Earlier, fares were based on 40 stages with a hike every 2 km — a system that hadn’t changed in over a decade. Now, the fare structure has been overhauled into 11 stages with broader slabs:
-
1 km to 30 km: 6 stages (every 5 km)
-
30 km to 80 km: 5 stages (every 10 km)
Based on a Maharashtra government resolution, this change is meant to simplify ticketing and align with national mobility standards like the NCMC card and e-ticketing systems.

“The new fare structure will simplify integration with Pune Metro, ensure accurate fare calculations, and align with e-ticketing and the National Common Mobility Card system,” said Deepak Mudhol, Chairman and Managing Director of PMPML.“It also aims to bring clarity and fairness for commuters while improving operational efficiency,” he added.
Mudhol further noted, “The new fare slabs are in line with recent revisions by transport bodies such as MSRTC, BEST (Mumbai), and Nagpur City Bus.”
🧾 Changes to PMPML Daily & Monthly Passes (2025)
As part of the newly revised fare structure, PMPML has announced changes to its daily and monthly pass system for commuters in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
❌ What’s Being Discontinued?
-
The existing daily pass of ₹40, valid only within Pune or Pimpri-Chinchwad city limits, will be discontinued.
-
Similarly, the monthly pass of ₹900 per city will also be withdrawn.
These passes were city-specific and did not allow seamless travel across both municipal boundaries.
✅ What’s New?
-
A Unified Daily Pass covering both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad regions will now be available at ₹70.
(Earlier, commuters needed two separate ₹40 passes = ₹80 total.) -
A Unified Monthly Pass will cost ₹1,500, allowing travel across both cities without restrictions.
(Earlier, ₹900 per city = ₹1,800 total.)
“I used to travel daily from New Sangavi to Swargate for college. Now that exams are over, the student pass isn’t valid anymore. Earlier, the general pass for both cities was ₹1,200 — now it’s ₹1,500. That’s not easy for students like us to manage, especially when we’re between semesters or internships.”

What’s Ahead?
- 500 new CNG buses will be introduced under a ₹230 crore PMRDA scheme.
- Focus on cost-effective staffing by outsourcing non-core roles.
- A push to sync PMPML with Pune Metro services for smoother commuting.
🚦 The Road Ahead
As PMPML enters a new phase of modernization, the fare revision is just one part of a broader push to create a seamless, smart, and commuter-friendly public transport system. With integration plans involving Pune Metro, digital ticketing, and National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) compatibility, the goal is to offer efficient, cashless, and connected mobility to the citizens of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding areas.
While the fare hike has drawn mixed reactions — especially from students and daily wage earners — officials insist that the changes are future-focused and necessary for long-term sustainability and service improvements.
