The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, which includes two major extensions of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Phase 1. The new segments—Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B) will span 12.75 km with 13 stations, further strengthening Pune’s east–west urban transit network.
The extended corridors will pass through key suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, enhancing access to IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential areas.
Prime Minister Modi said,
“Pune is rapidly developing in every sector today while also making a significant contribution to the country’s economy. To further accelerate this progress, we have approved the expansion of metro services here. This will not only boost transportation but also make people’s lives easier.”
The project, with an estimated cost of ₹3,626.24 crore, will be jointly funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies. The completion timeline is four years, and pre-construction activities like topographical surveys and design consultancy are already underway.
These corridors are a strategic extension of Line-2, aligning with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP). The goal is to reduce congestion on major roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road, and offer fast, clean, and integrated transport options.
Union Minister of State and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol, who played a key role in advocating for the project, stated:
“I had recently met Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to push for the approval. The 12.75 km stretch with 13 stations will connect key areas like Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters.”
“The decision will boost public transport and link with Line-1 and Line-3 at the District Court interchange. It will also integrate with intercity buses from Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Sambhajinagar, paving the way for smart multimodal transport in Pune.”
These new lines will integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with:
-
Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj)
-
Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court)
enabling seamless multimodal travel within Pune.
Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, welcomed the decision:
“I thank Prime Minister Modi for the important decision…These two elevated corridors will connect key areas like Chandni Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi.”
In alignment with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), the expansion is designed to:
-
Decongest arterial roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road
-
Offer eco-friendly, safe, and rapid transport
-
Improve public transport share and metro ridership
Planned connectivity also includes integration of intercity bus services:

-
From Mumbai and Bengaluru at Chandani Chowk
-
From Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar at Wagholi
Projected Daily Ridership for Line-2:
-
0.96 lakh (2027)
-
2.01 lakh (2037)
-
2.87 lakh (2047)
-
3.49 lakh (2057)
Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister, also emphasized the broader benefits:
“The decision will help reduce traffic congestion in Pune, improve the public transport system, and boost the economic, industrial, commercial, and educational growth of the city and surrounding areas.”
The project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro).
Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha-Metro, noted:
“These two new metro corridors will connect Pune’s rapidly growing eastern and western suburbs to the rest of the city. Thousands of citizens in these areas will benefit from the improved connectivity.”
Atul Gadgil, Director (Works), Maha-Metro, added:
“At present, the station design is almost complete. We will finalize contractors in the next few months, and work is likely to begin by the end of this year.”
The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which has already initiated pre-construction activities, including topographical surveys and design consultancy.
This strategic expansion is expected to unlock Pune’s economic potential and significantly contribute to sustainable and inclusive urban development.
