Schools must ensure that CCTV recordings are stored for a minimum of 15 days, with backup systems in place. This footage should be readily accessible to authorities for review, especially in cases involving safety violations or complaints.
The CBSE directive also stresses the need for responsible monitoring. Cameras must not be installed inside washrooms or toilets, maintaining students’ privacy.

The move aligns with recommendations from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). According to Clause 1(X) of the NCPCR’s manual, CCTV in schools should be regularly monitored and maintained to ensure safety.
