Chandigarh |
As tensions continue to simmer along the India-Pakistan border following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Chandigarh has stepped up its civil preparedness. The city saw an overwhelming response from citizens on Saturday at the launch of its Civil Defence Volunteer Program, hosted at Tagore Theatre.
Led by Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav, the initiative witnessed hundreds of residents lining up for enrollment in what the administration describes as “a frontline civic response team during times of conflict.”
“We will train citizens in basic police procedures, relief efforts, and public awareness techniques. Once assessed, the selected volunteers will be posted across sectors, marketplaces, and nearby villages,” said DC Yadav.
🔦 What’s the Training About?
The one-week training program includes:
- Civil defence rules
- Emergency response techniques
- Crowd management
- Basic law enforcement
- Rehabilitation support
There is no age restriction, and women are strongly encouraged to join, Yadav emphasized.
🔔 City in Alert Mode
This civic mobilisation comes days after:
- Air raid sirens were sounded in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula
- A city-wide blackout was enforced for three hours
- The Indian Armed Forces struck eight terror and military targets in Pakistan and PoK under Operation Sindoor
In light of the current emergency protocol:
- Shopping malls, restaurants, cinema halls, and non-medical shops were ordered shut from 7 PM to 6 AM.
- External lighting, generators, and inverters used outdoors have been temporarily banned.
- Cracker bursting at weddings or religious events is prohibited until July 7.
The initiative reflects growing citizen participation in India’s civil defence preparedness strategy amid regional instability.
