The Delhi High Court has reserved its verdict on Delhi University’s challenge against a Central Information Commission (CIC) order that directed the disclosure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bachelor of Arts degree from 1978.
Delhi University, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, argued that the information is held fiducially and does not serve public interest. The university maintained that the Right to Information (RTI) Act is not meant to satisfy third-party curiosity.
On the other hand, the petitioners claim that awarding a degree is a public act, making it subject to disclosure under the RTI Act. They argue that transparency in such matters is crucial, especially when it involves a public figure.
The case is part of an ongoing debate over the disclosure of PM Modi’s educational qualifications. In 2016, the CIC ordered the release of his degree details, but the matter has since been entangled in legal challenges.
The court’s final decision on this issue is awaited.
