‘Deva’ Review: Shahid Kapoor’s Fiery Presence Drives This Adaptation, But Is It Enough?

Published:

Rosshan Andrrews’ Deva is an ambitious remake of the 2013 Malayalam thriller Mumbai Police, reimagined for the Bollywood audience with a grittier, high-energy treatment. At its center is Shahid Kapoor, an actor who shines in roles that demand both emotion and raw aggression. Here, he blends the intensity of Kabir Singh with the depth of Haider to bring Dev Ambre to life .a cop who refuses to play by the rules.

The film’s first half is a stylish showcase of attitude, amplified by Amit Roy’s striking cinematography and Jack Bejoy’s powerful background score. Shahid delivers a performance that is both energetic and fearless, making his morally unpredictable character both disturbing and fascinating. Pooja Hegde, in a limited but effective role, softens the edges of Dev’s aggression, offering a glimpse into his troubled mind.

Yet, where Deva falters is in its translation of the original’s psychological depth. The adaptation drags in the second act, losing some of its impact by the climax. The twists, which once hit hard, now feel predictable, taking away some of the surprise factor.

The film, however, remains engaging, thanks to its dark mood and an intense performance by Kapoor. It is stylish, gripping, and entertaining—but unlike its protagonist, it holds back when it should go all in.

Now playing in theatres.
