Do Parents Really Know Best? Why Kids See Them as Bossier Than They Are

Published:

Ever felt like your parents are always telling you what to do? Maybe you’ve thought, “Why do they always act like they know everything?” Well, you’re not alone!

Parents can seem bossy, strict, or overprotective, but most of the time, there’s a reason behind it. They’re not just trying to ruin your fun—they’re trying to keep you safe.

Let’s take a closer look at why parents act this way and why you might see them as being “too much.”

Why Do Parents Seem Bossy?

Imagine you’re playing a game, and you know all the cheat codes to avoid losing. That’s kind of what parents are like—they’ve already played the game of life and learned from their mistakes.

As kids grow older, new risks appear—peer pressure, social media, complicated friendships, and even emotional struggles. Parents see these dangers and step in to guide you, even if it feels annoying.

Here’s how they do it:
🚫 Discipline: “You’re grounded!” (A classic!)
⚠️ Warnings: “When I was your age, I never behaved like that.”
😞 Disappointment: “I expected better from you.”

If this sounds familiar, it’s because parents use these strategies to protect their kids from harm. They’ve seen it all before, and they don’t want you to repeat the same mistakes.

Your Brain is Still in Progress!

Now, here’s something interesting—your brain is still growing. 🧠

Starting around age 10, there’s a lot of activity happening inside your brain, especially in the areas that control emotions like anger, anxiety, and frustration. This is why small things, like being told “no,” can feel really unfair or even make you angry for no reason.

The last part of your brain to fully develop is called the prefrontal cortex (right behind your forehead). This is the part that helps you:

✔️ Think before reacting
✔️ See things from another person’s perspective
✔️ Understand why parents worry

Here’s the catch—this part won’t be fully developed until around age 25! That means right now, you’re naturally wired to see things from your own point of view. So if your parents seem bossy, it’s not just them—it’s also how your brain processes things right now.

Parents Don’t Have All the Answers Either!

Believe it or not, parents also struggle with knowing what’s best. In a recent study, over 40% of parents admitted they feel unsure about their parenting choices.

So while they might act confident, they’re also figuring things out as they go. Sometimes they second-guess themselves, wonder if they’re being too strict, or worry about making the wrong decisions.

They just want the best for you—even if it doesn’t always feel that way.

Give Them (And Yourself) a Break!

So, next time your parents set a rule, say no, or act like they know best, try to remember:

💡 They’re doing it out of love.
💡 Your brain is still growing, so things might feel more frustrating than they actually are.
💡 Parents don’t always have all the answers, even if they pretend they do.

And if things get tense, here’s a challenge: Give them a break—and maybe even a hug. You might be surprised how much it means to them.
