No Heatwave Expected Till April 22, Says IMD
New Delhi |
Delhi is set for a gusty and cloudy spell over the coming days, with drizzles and moderate winds expected to bring welcome relief from harsh heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that no formal heatwave is expected until April 22, despite rising temperatures.
On April 12, Delhi’s Safdarjung station recorded 39.1°C, 2.3 degrees above normal. The mercury may touch 40°C again, but active western disturbances and cyclonic circulation from Pakistan’s southwest are set to moderate the discomfort.
“This western disturbance will primarily impact Delhi’s weather on Friday and Saturday,” said IMD scientist Krishna Mishra.
🌬️ What to Expect in Delhi:
- Cloudy skies and patchy drizzle from Thursday onward
- Wind speeds to rise to 30–40 kmph by the weekend
- Air quality improvement due to dust dispersion
- Max temperatures: 39–41°C
- Min temperatures: 24–26°C (slightly cooler by Friday)
According to Mahesh Palawat, VP at Skymet, southwesterly winds from Pakistan will sweep through Delhi with increasing intensity through the weekend. Open areas may experience dust storms, but the wind action is expected to clear out pollutants, providing temporary relief from poor air quality.
On Wednesday, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 220, classified as “poor” by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Windy conditions may help bring this number down.
🌎 Elsewhere in India:
- Himachal Pradesh: Alert for heavy rain due to the same western disturbance
- Rajasthan: Continues to suffer under extreme heat
- Southern States: Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala experiencing rains and thunderstorms
- Northeast: Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh on alert for heavy rainfall
While Delhi won’t escape the heat entirely, a mix of clouds, gusty winds, and occasional drizzle will bring temporary comfort to residents. With Western Disturbances now active across the northern belt, all eyes are on early monsoon signs and broader climate patterns for the coming months.
