Elon Musk Slams Trump Adviser Over Tariff Policy, Calls Him “Truly a Moron”

Published:

In yet another sign of growing friction between tech titan Elon Musk and the Trump administration, the Tesla CEO publicly criticized Peter Navarro, trade adviser to President Donald Trump, calling him “truly a moron” on social media. The comment came as Navarro defended the administration’s aggressive tariff stance in a recent interview with CNBC.

At the heart of the clash is a disagreement over America’s industrial policy—particularly Trump’s push for more parts of cars to be made inside the US. Navarro described Tesla as a “car assembler” that relies heavily on parts from countries like Japan, China, and Taiwan, rather than building everything in the US.

Responding on X (formerly Twitter), Musk hit back, saying Navarro’s claims were “demonstrably false.” He pointed out that Tesla has the highest percentage of American-made components and remains one of the most vertically integrated automakers in the US.

“Tesla has the most American-made cars, by any definition. Navarro is dumber than a sack of bricks,” Musk wrote in a series of posts.

Musk’s comments quickly made headlines—not only because of their harsh tone but because they reveal a deepening divide within conservative circles on how to handle trade, globalization, and innovation.

What Triggered the Feud?

In the interview, Navarro had stated:

“We want tires made in Akron. Transmissions in Indianapolis. Engines in Flint. And we want the cars manufactured here.”

This old-school view of industrial policy clashed with Musk’s more global, tech-driven model of production, where supply chains are international but assembly and innovation are often localized.

Musk, never shy about confrontation, escalated the feud with personal remarks, even mocking Navarro’s academic background.

“He got a PhD from Harvard. That’s not a good thing,” Musk posted—before later deleting the comment.

What’s at Stake?

The fight isn’t just personal. It’s a flashpoint in a bigger battle over tariffs, manufacturing, and America’s economic direction. While Trump pushes for high tariffs to bring jobs back to the US, Musk supports free trade, especially between the US and Europe. He has even made a direct appeal to Trump in private, according to reports.

This week, US markets have been shaky, partly due to worries over the new wave of tariffs. The Dow dropped over 1,000 points amid fears of a deepening trade war.

White House Reaction: Let Them Spar

The White House played down the conflict, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying:

“These are obviously two individuals who have very different views… Boys will be boys.”

She added that it shows President Trump’s openness to “diverse opinions”—a soft spin on what is clearly a serious ideological split among Trump’s inner circle.

Why It Matters for Indian Readers

India, as a growing manufacturing hub and a key player in global supply chains, is watching this closely. The US tariff war is reshaping global trade routes, and India’s position as an alternative to China could strengthen—but only if India balances its diplomacy and trade interests smartly.

Moreover, Musk’s call for fewer trade barriers aligns with India’s ongoing push to attract global companies through schemes like Make in India and PLI (Production Linked Incentive) incentives.
