Mozilla has officially entered the AI-powered browser battle with the launch of AI Window, a new assistant mode in Firefox that allows users to choose from multiple AI models putting the spotlight on privacy, openness and user choice at a time when major browsers are doubling down on their own AI ecosystems.

Instead of limiting users to a single built-in chatbot, Mozilla’s AI Window integrates directly into the browsing experience and lets people decide which AI system will assist them. The feature sits alongside Firefox’s classic and private browsing modes, marking the browser’s most ambitious leap into AI yet. As Chrome pushes Gemini deeper into its interface and Edge transforms itself into a Copilot-centered browser, Mozilla is making a deliberately different pitch: AI without lock-in.

Announcing the feature, Mozilla took a subtle dig at rival browsers, saying others were building AI features that keep users “stuck in a conversational loop”. Firefox’s vision, the company said, is for AI to guide and complement browsing not trap users in endless chat threads. The approach echoes Mozilla’s long-standing philosophy of supporting an open, user-first web.

AI Window is not yet available for download, but Mozilla is building it “in the open” and has already launched a waitlist to gather early feedback. The move signals a shift for a browser that has struggled to retain mainstream relevance while competitors surge ahead. Firefox today controls just around 3% of the desktop browser market, compared to Chrome’s dominant 65%. With Google packing Gemini into Chrome and Microsoft turning Edge into a showcase for Copilot, Firefox risks being left behind in a rapidly AI-focused landscape.

This isn’t Mozilla’s first brush with AI. Last year, Firefox introduced a “shake to summarise” feature on iPhone, which generated quick AI summaries of webpages. But AI Window represents a far deeper and more strategic commitment, suggesting Mozilla is ready to reshape how AI interacts with the browser itself.

A key differentiator is Mozilla’s emphasis on privacy and freedom of choice. Users won’t be tied to a single AI model, and Mozilla promises transparency about how each model works. But big questions remain: Which models will be available? How smooth will switching between them feel? And will the added flexibility be enough to convince everyday users to switch from default browsers like Chrome or Safari?

Execution will be crucial. If the experience feels clunky or switching models breaks the browsing flow, even privacy-conscious users may choose the convenience of their pre-installed browsers.

Still, Mozilla’s timing may work in its favour. Browsers like Arc are experimenting with AI-powered workflows, and services like Perplexity are pushing AI-first search experiences. The entire browsing landscape is shifting—and Mozilla wants back in the race.

By betting on openness over ecosystem lock-in, Firefox is trying to reassert its identity in an AI-driven era. Whether AI Window is the spark that helps it regain relevance will depend on how compelling and seamless the experience becomes. For now, Mozilla is making one thing clear: the future of browsing doesn’t have to be controlled by Big Tech’s AI of choice.
