Germany Election: Conservatives Win, Far-Right Gains Ground

Published:

Germany’s latest election has delivered a major political shift. The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Friedrich Merz, has won with over 28% of the vote. At the same time, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has made historic gains, securing around 20% and becoming the country’s second-largest political force.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) suffered a heavy defeat, recording one of its worst results. Scholz admitted responsibility, as his government struggled with economic issues, rising energy costs, and immigration concerns—key factors that opposition parties used to their advantage.

Despite the AfD’s success, mainstream parties continue to reject any alliance with them. This leaves Friedrich Merz in a tough position, as he must now form a coalition, likely with the weakened SPD or other centrist parties.

This election reflects a growing trend across Europe, where frustration with traditional parties is driving voters toward the far-right. In Germany, the results signal a clear demand for change, but how the new leadership will respond remains to be seen.
