Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were lashed by heavy rain on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for several parts of the city and surrounding districts. The downpour brought brief relief from heat but also raised concerns of waterlogging and traffic snarls across the capital.
IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Strong Winds
According to the IMD’s latest nowcast, moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning is expected across North, Central, South, and East Delhi, as well as Gurugram, over the next few hours.
Winds are likely to reach speeds of 30–40 km/h, with the storm extending toward Sonipat, Kharkhoda, Bagpat, and Farukhnagar.
The alert was also extended to parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, including Kurukshetra, Jhajjar, Mahendragarh, Nuh, Hathras, and Dholpur, where light rain and thunderstorms are likely.
“Moderate rainfall with lightning and gusty winds may continue over the next two hours,” the IMD statement read, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid open areas.
Delhi Airport Issues Passenger Advisory
The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi issued a public advisory on Tuesday evening, warning passengers about possible flight delays and disruptions due to the weather.
“Due to inclement weather in Delhi, flight operations may be impacted. Our on-ground teams are working with all stakeholders to ensure smooth operations,” the airport authority said.
Temperature and Air Quality Update
The city recorded a minimum temperature of 21°C, around 1.3°C below normal, while the maximum is expected to settle near 35°C.
At 9 a.m., Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 68 (satisfactory), according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
AQI between 0–50 is classified as “good,” 51–100 as “satisfactory,” and 101–200 as “moderate.”
Meteorologists say that continued rainfall over the next 24 hours could temporarily improve air quality and lower surface temperatures across the capital.
The IMD’s orange alert signals heightened caution for commuters and travelers. With heavy showers expected to persist through mid-week, residents are advised to plan travel accordingly and monitor real-time updates from the IMD and Delhi Airport Authority.
