India Looks to Cut Tariffs Ahead of Modi-Trump Talks to Ease Trade Tensions

Published:

New Delhi

In a strategic move to strengthen trade relations and avoid potential friction with the United States, India is planning significant tariff reductions ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington on February 12-13. The move is aimed at boosting American exports to India while preventing a trade conflict similar to the ongoing U.S.-China tariff dispute.

Tariff Reductions: Sectors in Focus

According to government sources, India is considering tariff reductions in at least a dozen key sectors, including:

  • Electronics
  • Medical and surgical equipment
  • Specialty chemicals

Additionally, India may cut import duties on products it already sources from the U.S., such as dish antennas and wood pulp, aligning with the country’s domestic production strategies.

Preventing a Trade Clash

A senior Indian official, speaking to Reuters, highlighted that the primary goal of the Modi-Trump meeting is to stop trade tensions from escalating. The U.S. administration under President Donald Trump has aggressively pushed for “reciprocal tariffs”, arguing that trading partners should offer American products the same market access that U.S. companies receive abroad.

The U.S. has previously imposed 10% tariffs on China, prompting countermeasures on U.S. exports. Indian officials want to ensure a similar situation does not arise between India and the U.S., which have historically been strong trade partners.

A High-Stakes Meeting in Washington

The Modi-Trump meeting is expected to focus on multiple key areas, including:

  • Trade and tariff negotiations
  • Defense cooperation
  • Technology and investment opportunities

While broad trade discussions will take place during the visit, detailed talks on tariff restructuring are expected in follow-up negotiations.

Trump’s Mixed Signals on India’s Trade Policies

Despite frequently criticizing India’s trade practices, Trump has also praised Modi, suggesting room for a favorable trade deal. In the past, Trump has labeled India a “big abuser” of trade policies, demanding that it increase purchases of U.S.-made defense and security equipment.

However, with bilateral trade surpassing $118 billion in 2023-24, India and the U.S. remain crucial economic partners. India also maintains a trade surplus with the U.S., which has been a point of concern for Trump’s administration.

What’s Next?

As India fine-tunes its tariff adjustments, the success of Modi’s visit will depend on how well both sides navigate their trade differences. If handled strategically, this could pave the way for stronger economic cooperation, avoiding any potential trade disputes.

With the global trade landscape shifting, India’s move to offer tariff reductions may signal a new phase in Indo-U.S. economic relations—one that ensures mutual benefit without escalating tensions.
