Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, including the capital city of Bangkok. He said that India is ready to extend all possible help to both nations in the aftermath of the natural disaster.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote,
“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance.”
The earthquake comes just days ahead of the BIMSTEC Summit scheduled in Bangkok next week, which PM Modi is expected to attend. The Prime Minister said that Indian authorities have been asked to remain on standby and that the Ministry of External Affairs is in constant touch with both Myanmar and Thailand.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called for an emergency meeting to assess the damage caused by the quake.
The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) includes India, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The upcoming summit in Bangkok will focus on boosting cooperation among these countries, especially in areas like disaster response, connectivity, trade, and climate resilience.
