In a major step that reflects cautious optimism along the India-Pakistan border, Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw of the Border Security Force (BSF), who had been in Pakistani custody since April 23, was formally handed back to India at the Attari-Wagah border on Wednesday morning.
What Happened?
According to the official statement from BSF:
Purnam Kumar Shaw, BSF Jawan Detained by Pakistan, Returns Home After 21 Days
“Today at 1030 hrs, Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw has been taken back from Pakistan by the BSF at the Attari – Wagah border. Constable Shaw had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistani territory while on operational duty in the area of Ferozepur sector on 23rd April 2025 around 1150 hrs and was detained by Pak Rangers.”
Shaw, part of the BSF’s 182nd Battalion, was on duty near the border fence, in uniform and carrying his service rifle, when he reportedly moved into a shaded area to rest and unknowingly crossed the International Border into Pakistan. He was subsequently apprehended by the Pakistan Rangers.
This incident occurred just a day after the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 civilians lost their lives in an attack on tourists by militants in the Baisaran valley, adding further tension to an already sensitive situation.
Following Shaw’s detention, flag meetings were initiated by both Indian and Pakistani border officials to negotiate his return.
Family’s Relief & Political Reactions

Shaw’s family expressed immense relief and gratitude upon receiving news of his return.
“We are very happy today. We thank the central government and the BSF authorities for their efforts in safely bringing him back. The past two weeks have been filled with sleepless nights and uncertainty for us… Our prayers have finally been answered,” a family member told reporters.
The event drew reactions from political leaders across party lines:
Trinamool Congress posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Home at last. After days of anxiety and uncertainty, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw has finally been repatriated. Mamata Banerjee personally reached out to his wife multiple times, offering reassurance and support during the ordeal.”
BJP West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar thanked PM Narendra Modi:
“A heartfelt thank you to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji… Today, the safe return of @BSF_India jawan Shri Purnam Kumar Shaw… is not just a moment of relief—it’s a victory of India’s resolve, diplomacy, and national pride.”
Context: Humanitarian Gesture Amid High Tensions
The return of Shaw came as India and Pakistan simultaneously exchanged detained personnel this week in what analysts are calling a rare humanitarian gesture and a confidence-building measure amid rising tensions in the region.
Earlier in the week, both countries closed and reopened multiple border airports, airspace corridors were realigned, and high-level diplomatic talks were reportedly ongoing behind the scenes.
While the border remains volatile and both countries continue to maintain heightened alertness, this development offers a rare moment of shared humanity and a potential opening for further de-escalation efforts.
