As summer intensifies, a viral social media message has sent panic across Pune, claiming that the city could witness an unprecedented 55°C temperature spike on May 29. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially debunked the claim, calling it completely false and misleading.
What’s the Reality?
Pune’s Lohegaon recorded 42°C this week — the highest temperature in Maharashtra — shifting attention from typically hotter regions like Vidarbha, which recently received rainfall.
Speaking to the media, SD Sanap, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Pune, clarified:
“There is no scientific basis for the 55°C claim. Pune’s forecast remains within the 38°C to 40°C range.”
🛑 Fake Alerts Can Create Panic
The IMD urges citizens not to fall for unverified social media forwards and instead rely on official updates and advisories.
