Is a 55°C Heatwave Headed to Pune? Here’s What the IMD Really Says

Published:

As summer intensifies, a viral social media message has sent panic across Pune, claiming that the city could witness an unprecedented 55°C temperature spike on May 29. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially debunked the claim, calling it completely false and misleading.

What’s the Reality?

Pune’s Lohegaon recorded 42°C this week — the highest temperature in Maharashtra — shifting attention from typically hotter regions like Vidarbha, which recently received rainfall.

Speaking to the media, SD Sanap, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Pune, clarified:

“There is no scientific basis for the 55°C claim. Pune’s forecast remains within the 38°C to 40°C range.”

🛑 Fake Alerts Can Create Panic

The IMD urges citizens not to fall for unverified social media forwards and instead rely on official updates and advisories.

🧴 Heatwave Safety Guidelines Issued by IMD:

General Tips:

  • Stay informed via official weather bulletins.
  • Drink plenty of fluids — water, ORS, lassi, lemon water, buttermilk.
  • Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothes.
  • Use umbrellas or hats when stepping out.
  • Avoid going out between 12 PM to 3 PM.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors if working outdoors.

🚨 Warning Signs of Heatstroke:

  • Dizziness, headache, vomiting, chest pain, and breathing difficulty.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms appear.

👴 Elderly & Vulnerable Groups:

  • Check in twice daily on senior citizens and those with illnesses.
  • Use wet towels, cool baths, and ensure hydration.
  • Keep emergency numbers handy.

👶 Child Safety:

  • Never leave children in parked vehicles.
  • Monitor for signs of dehydration or exhaustion.
  • Consult a doctor promptly if needed.

🐾 Animal Welfare:

  • Keep pets in shaded, ventilated spaces.
  • Provide clean drinking water at all times.
  • Avoid walks or exposure during peak heat hours.

⚠️ What to Avoid:

  • Alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks (they increase dehydration).
  • Going barefoot, wearing tight or heavy clothes.
  • Doing intense physical work during peak heat.

There is no truth to the rumor about Pune reaching 55°C. While temperatures are higher than average, IMD confirms no extreme heatwave of that scale is expected. Residents are urged to stay cool, stay hydrated, and trust only verified weather updates.
