Greta Thunberg, a young climate activist from Sweden, said that she and other volunteers were stopped by Israeli forces while trying to take aid to Gaza by sea.
The boat, called Madleen, was part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition — a group that sends humanitarian aid to help people in Gaza. The group says their goal is to peacefully break the blockade and bring supplies to civilians.
Greta Thunberg is famous for leading climate change protests around the world and speaking at big global events. She has also spoken out in support of Palestinian rights.
What Happened?
The ship left Italy on June 1, 2025, carrying food and supplies. On Sunday, several Israeli navy boats surrounded the ship in international waters.
In a short video posted online, Thunberg said:
“We are being stopped and kidnapped by Israeli forces in international waters. Please help us.”
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said that Israeli forces boarded the boat and cut off communication. Photos show the activists sitting on the boat with their hands raised, wearing life jackets.
Before the connection was lost, activists said drones were flying over the ship and spraying it with a white paint-like substance. Strange sounds were also played over their radio.
Israel’s Statement
Israel’s government said, “The boat was trying to enter a restricted area and would not be allowed to reach Gaza. The Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, had already ordered the navy to stop the boat. The aid on the ship would be given to Gaza through official humanitarian channels, and the activists would be sent back to their home countries.”
