India’s kharif crop sowing has seen a marginal increase in 2025, with the total sown area reaching 89.29 lakh hectares as of June 13, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare. This marks a rise of 1.48 lakh hectares compared to 87.81 lakh hectares during the same period in 2024.
Crop-Wise Highlights

Rice:
Sown area rose to 4.53 lakh hectares, up by 0.53 lakh hectares from last year’s 4.00 lakh hectares. The normal rice area based on the last five years is 403.09 lakh hectares. -
Pulses:
Coverage increased to 3.07 lakh hectares, compared to 2.60 lakh hectares in 2024.-
Urd bean and moong bean saw gains of 0.24 and 0.17 lakh hectares, respectively.

Arhar registered a decline of 0.11 lakh hectares.

Coarse Cereals (Shri Anna group):
Slight dip to 5.89 lakh hectares, down from 5.90 lakh hectares in 2024.-
Bajra rose sharply to 0.86 lakh hectares (from just 0.03 lakh hectares).

Maize and ragi declined by 0.68 and 0.29 lakh hectares, respectively.

Oilseeds:
Grew to 2.05 lakh hectares, up from 1.50 lakh hectares last year.-
The increase was mainly driven by soybeans, which added 0.66 lakh hectares.

Groundnut decreased by 0.13 lakh hectares.

Sugarcane:
Continued steady growth with 55.07 lakh hectares sown, slightly above last year’s 54.88 lakh hectares. -
Cotton and Jute &and Mesta:
Both saw slight reductions in area—cotton down by 0.09 lakh hectares and jute & mesta by 0.17 lakh hectares.
