The Maharashtra government has extended the deadline to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on older vehicles to August 15, 2025. This is the third time the deadline has been pushed, as many vehicle owners are yet to comply.
The rule applies to all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Initially, the deadline was March 31, then extended to the end of April, and later to June 30. With the latest extension, owners now have time till mid-August to get their HSRPs fitted.
🚘 What is an HSRP?
An HSRP is a tamper-proof number plate designed to prevent vehicle theft and counterfeiting. It is made of aluminium and features:
-
A 20×20 mm chromium-based Ashoka Chakra hologram
-
Two non-removable locks
-
Standardised font and layout
These plates are mandatory across India and help digitize vehicle records and improve road safety.
How to Book HSRP
-
Visit bookmyhsrp.com or your state’s HSRP portal like Maharashtra Transport
-
Enter vehicle details and book an appointment
-
Pay fees (approx. ₹450 for two-wheelers; ₹745 for cars, plus GST)
-
Select online booking or home fitment—note home fitment adds an extra charge
To make the process easier, the Maharashtra transport department has:
-
Set up over 150 authorised centres in Pune alone
-
Introduced online booking and registration facilities
Despite these efforts, public response has remained low.
The transport department has warned that strict action will be taken against those who fail to comply by the new deadline.
