In a big push to promote tourism and improve access to historic and religious sites, the Maharashtra government has proposed eight new ropeway projects in Pune district.
These ropeways are part of a larger plan involving 45 ropeway projects across the state, many of which will be built under the Parvatmala Yojana—a central government scheme aimed at connecting hilly and remote areas.
🏞️ Locations Chosen for Pune Ropeways:
- Sinhagad Fort
- Rajgad Fort
- Shivneri Fort
- Jejuri (Khandoba Temple)
- Ashtavinayak Lenyadri (Ganpati temple)
- Darya Ghat (scenic site)
- Bhimashankar Jyotirling (sacred Shiva temple)
- Khandoba Nimgaon (spiritual site)
These locations are rich in heritage and attract thousands of tourists and pilgrims annually. The ropeways will help ease access, especially for the elderly, and boost the local economy.
🔧 Who Will Build Them?
Out of the 45 ropeway projects across Maharashtra:
- 16 will be developed by the state government
- 29 will be developed by the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML), a branch of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)
The PWD (Public Works Department) will help in identifying land and managing lease agreements for the projects. In some cases, the government may even invest and share revenue from the ropeway operations.
