Maharashtra Schools to Reopen on June 15, Not April 15: Education Commissioner Clears Confusion

Published:

Mumbai:

Maharashtra’s Education Commissioner, Sachindra Pratap Singh, has clarified that all schools in the state will reopen on June 15, 2025, as per the usual academic schedule. There was speculation that the academic year might start earlier in April, aligning with CBSE schools, but the government has decided to stick to the traditional reopening date.

Why the Change Was Discussed?

The idea of shifting the school reopening to April was considered to bring Maharashtra in line with CBSE’s schedule. Some educators believed it would give students more time to prepare for board exams. However, after discussions with various stakeholders, the government decided against it.

Why Schools Will Reopen in June?

  1. Extreme Summer Heat: Maharashtra, especially regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada, faces intense heat waves in April and May. Opening schools during this time could pose health risks for students and teachers.
  2. Textbook & Exam Schedule: The current academic system is structured around a June to May cycle. Changing the dates would disrupt textbook distribution, teacher transfers, and exam schedules.
  3. Cultural & Social Factors: Many festivals, vacations, and family activities in Maharashtra align with the existing school calendar. A sudden change could create confusion among parents and students.

Final Decision

After reviewing all concerns, the Maharashtra Education Department has confirmed that the 2025-26 school year will begin on June 15, 2025. While discussions on future changes may continue, for now, the traditional schedule remains unchanged.
