In a move aimed at improving educational planning and infrastructure tracking, the Maharashtra government has approved ₹1.04 crore for the geo-tagging of all schools and anganwadi centres across the state.
The initiative will be carried out by the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) and is expected to offer precise location-based data through photographs and GPS mapping. A government resolution has been issued by the School Education Department to formalize the project.
Currently, school-related information—such as student-teacher strength and infrastructure—is available on the UDISE Plus portal, managed by the Central Government. However, the education department lacks vital geographical data such as:
-
Exact coordinates of schools and anganwadis
-
Population density around institutions
-
Distance from roads, highways, and nearby services
To bridge this gap, MRSAC will integrate data from multiple departments and UDISE Plus into a single digital dashboard. This will help policymakers implement and monitor schemes more effectively.
As part of the plan, all schools and anganwadis—regardless of department—will be mapped through a mobile application. Each location will be tagged with its latitude, longitude, and supporting images.
This project marks a key step in bringing transparency, accessibility, and better planning to Maharashtra’s education and childcare systems.
