In just two weeks, Mahavatar Narsimha has stormed the box office, grossing ₹100 crore and setting a new record as India’s most successful animated film. With an opening day collection of over ₹1 crore, the film has not only posed stiff competition to Saiyaara but also held its own against Hollywood superhero releases like Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps. The massive audience demand has led to a sharp rise in screens and shows across the country.
Speaking exclusively to a newspaper, director Ashwin Kumar said,
“We knew from the start this had to be animated. The scale and creative freedom needed could never be achieved in live-action without spending way more. And with live-action, when you use a superstar, people tend to project the God onto the actor and vice versa — it takes away from the purity. I wanted to keep it authentic.”
The filmmaker believes the success is rooted in cultural pride.
“The people of Bharat embraced their own history. No one believed us when we said this film would build such momentum, but it’s only the beginning. Bhakt Prahlad and Bhagwaan Narsimha are part of our heritage.”

Mahavatar Narsimha is the first film in a planned cinematic universe announced earlier. It took five years to bring the vision to life. Addressing speculation about the budget, Ashwin clarified:
“We made this film on a budget of ₹40 crore. We invested extra in specific moments that needed to connect with the soul, like the last 30-minute rampage scene and the moment when Prahlad opens his eyes to see the Lord before him.”

Future Plans – Without Compromising the Core
When asked about the second part of the universe, Ashwin stressed that the team would maintain the core principles:
“We know we can get star voiceovers, but the mool sidhant will never be compromised. Important people guiding us will ensure we stay on track. As long as we keep the soul intact and understand the audience’s emotions, everything else is just a bonus.”
The film has earned an estimated ₹125.65 crore net in India within its first 15 days. The 16th-day box office figures and occupancy are awaited, but industry analysts expect the momentum to continue. This movie has achieved IMDb rating of massive 9.4/10.
