New ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass from August 15: All You Need to Know

Published:

The Union Road Transport Ministry has announced a new FASTag-based annual pass for private vehicles, designed to reduce the toll burden on commuters and make highway travel more affordable and seamless. The scheme, unveiled by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, will be implemented from August 15, 2025.

What is the Annual FASTag Pass?

The Annual FASTag Pass is a prepaid toll payment option priced at ₹3,000, allowing up to 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways in one year from activation.

🔈 Nitin Gadkari said:

“This will enable people to travel on a very large scale. With just ₹3,000, commuters can make 200 toll plaza crossings in a year. Earlier, this would have cost around ₹10,000.” (Source-HT)

According to the Ministry, the average toll cost drops from ₹50 to just ₹15 per trip, helping regular highway users save up to ₹7,000 annually.

Who Can Use the Pass?

The pass is only available for private, non-commercial vehicles such as:

  • Cars

  • Jeeps

  • Vans

It cannot be used by commercial, freight, or goods vehicles.

Gadkari clarified:

“The annual FASTag will be valid only for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans.”

How to Activate the Pass?

The annual pass can be linked to your existing FASTag if:

  • It is properly affixed to your vehicle

  • It is linked to a valid vehicle registration number

  • It is not blacklisted

📲 Activation and Renewal will be possible through:

  • Rajmarg Yatra App

  • Official websites of NHAI and MoRTH

A dedicated link will soon be shared for users to access these services easily.

Validity: 200 Trips or 1 Year

The pass will be activated on the current FASTag and will be valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips (whichever comes first).

Where Will It Work?

This pass is valid only on toll plazas under the National Highway network and Expressways.
On state highways or local toll booths, standard FASTag charges will continue to apply.

How Are Trips Counted?

  • On open toll roads:
Each toll plaza = 1 trip

  • On closed tolling systems (e.g., Delhi-Mumbai Expressway):
    One entry-exit pair = 1 trip

  • A round trip = 2 trips

As per the Road Ministry’s 2024 year-end review, over 10.1 crore FASTags had been issued across India by December 1, 2024—highlighting growing adoption of digital tolling systems.

This new scheme:

  • Makes highway travel more affordable

  • Reduces congestion at toll plazas

  • Offers a transparent and efficient experience for commuters

  • Addresses public complaints about multiple tolls within short distances
