Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed at Calgary International Airport early Tuesday to attend the G7 Summit being held in Kananaskis, Alberta. The two-day summit, hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, marks Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in the G7 and his first visit to Canada since 2015.
Significance of the Visit
This high-stakes trip comes after a period of strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada following the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Modi’s visit and Carney’s invitation signal a mutual willingness to reset bilateral ties. Ahead of his departure, PM Modi said,
“India and Canada will work together with renewed vigor, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”
India hopes to rebuild ties based on trust and sensitivity, after diplomatic expulsions on both sides in 2023.

G7 Leaders Issue Strong Joint Statement on Israel-Iran Conflict
On June 16, 2025, during the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, the G7 leaders released a joint statement reaffirming their collective stance on the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran.
“We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.”
The statement, made public by the Canadian government, affirms Israel’s right to self-defense, expresses support for civilian protection, and explicitly names Iran as the principal source of regional instability and terror.
Leaders from France, the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, the EU, and international bodies such as the UN, World Bank, and IMF are in attendance.
India’s Role at G7
Though not a member, India has been a regular Outreach invitee since 2019, using the platform to represent the voice of the Global South. Last year, PM Modi joined discussions on AI, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean.
During the summit, Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with global leaders, strengthening India’s presence in key international dialogues.
