PM Modi Begins 5-Nation Tour with Historic Visit to Ghana; Receives Top Honour and Signs Key Agreements

Published:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a significant diplomatic tour covering five nations—Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia—from July 2 to 9. His first stop in Ghana marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the West African country in over three decades.

Strengthening Ties with Ghana

During his visit to Accra, PM Modi was warmly welcomed with a ceremonial reception and a 21-gun salute. Children sang “Hare Krishna” as part of the cultural greeting, and members of the Indian diaspora offered a heartfelt reception.

PM Modi held delegation-level talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. where the two leaders decided to elevate the relationship to the level of a Comprehensive Partnership.

“India is not just a partner but a co-traveller in Ghana’s development journey,” said PM Modi during a media address.

He added that both sides have agreed to double two-way trade in the next five years, and India is ready to share its successful UPI digital payments model to boost Ghana’s fintech sector.

📄 Four MoUs Signed to Boost Cooperation

India and Ghana signed four key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs):

  1. Cultural Exchange Programme – To promote collaboration in art, music, dance, literature, and heritage.

  2. Standards and Certification – Between the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).

  3. Traditional Medicine – Collaboration between Ghana’s Institute of Traditional & Alternative Medicine and India’s Institute of Teaching & Research in Ayurveda.

  4. Joint Commission Meeting – To institutionalise high-level dialogues and review bilateral cooperation regularly.

“President Mahama and I have decided to give our bilateral partnership status of a Comprehensive Partnership,” PM Modi reiterated.

Ghana’s Top Civilian Honour

In a significant diplomatic gesture, PM Modi was conferred with The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

“Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana,’” PM Modi wrote on X.

Speaking after the talks, PM Modi emphasised peace and dialogue:

“This is not the era of war; problems should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.”

He also announced plans to deepen cooperation in:

  • Counter-terrorism

  • Training of armed forces

  • Maritime security

  • Defence supplies

  • Cyber security

🌍 What’s Next on the Tour

After Ghana, PM Modi is scheduled to visit:

  • Trinidad and Tobago (July 3–4)

  • Argentina

  • Brazil (July 5–8, including participation in the BRICS summit)

  • Namibia, where he will pay tribute to the late decolonisation leader Sam Nujoma.

In Brazil, India and Brazil are expected to discuss defence cooperation. This will including the Akash surface-to-air missile system and secure communication technology, especially after its use during Operation Sindoor.

PM Modi has reaffirmed India’s commitment to the BRICS agenda and emphasized cooperation with the Global South. His visit is expected to boost India’s standing in multilateral forums and create stronger South-South partnerships.

“The BRICS summit in Rio De Janeiro will help create a balanced multipolar world order,” he said before departing.

🌍 Five Nations. Eight Days. One Bold Vision.

PM Modi’s whirlwind tour across Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia isn’t just another diplomatic trip — it’s a statement of intent.

Each stop is carefully chosen. In Ghana, he’s building bridges in traditional medicine, gold trade, and cultural ties that go back to the 1950s. Then, in Trinidad & Tobago, he’ll reconnect with a country that shares not just trade interests, but also history. It’s the 180th anniversary of Indian migration there.

Next, Argentina is about the future: food security, tech innovation, and green energy. The handshake here isn’t just political — it’s about building supply chains that matter.

In Brazil, it’s BRICS time. Modi joins global leaders to talk climate, peace, AI, and India’s growing influence on the world stage.

And finally, Namibia. A land of diamonds, uranium, and digital potential. Here, India’s UPI could go global, and old friendship meets new opportunity.

From fintech to food, climate culture, minerals to medicine — this tour is India’s way of saying: we’re not just participating in the global order, we’re helping shape it.
