PM Modi Sends Message to Bangladesh’s Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus on National Day

Published:

On the occasion of Bangladesh’s National Day (March 26), Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a message to Muhammad Yunus, who is currently leading Bangladesh’s interim government after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

In the letter, PM Modi spoke about the “shared history” of India and Bangladesh, especially the 1971 Liberation War, and said that India will continue working with Bangladesh for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

“The spirit of the Liberation War remains a guiding light for our relationship. We are committed to working together with mutual respect for each other’s concerns,” Modi wrote.

Why This Letter Matters

This message comes at a time when Bangladesh is going through political changes. Former PM Sheikh Hasina had to leave office, and Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Prize winner, is now temporarily leading the country.

There have also been reports of rising attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, since the change in government. India has raised its concerns about this.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar confirmed that India is in regular talks with the new government to ensure peace and safety for all people.

What Did Yunus Say?

While celebrating Bangladesh’s independence, Muhammad Yunus remembered the sacrifices made during the 1971 war and the people who lost their lives in the July 2024 protests.

He also talked about the dream of creating a strong joint economy between Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Bhutan, which could help all countries in the region.

Behind these words of friendship, there is tension. India is watching closely to see how the new government in Bangladesh handles things — especially in terms of democracy, minority safety, and peace in the region.

Bangladesh is a close neighbour, and what happens there affects India directly — from trade to border security and cultural ties.
