Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed on Friday that he will participate in the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, later this month. His confirmation came after a call from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi congratulated PM Carney on his recent election victory and expressed enthusiasm about strengthening India-Canada ties.
“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,” PM Modi wrote.
What is the G7?
The Group of Seven (G7) is an influential forum comprising seven of the world’s most advanced economies — the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada. Together, these nations represent nearly 50% of global net wealth and a combined population of around 780 million.
Originally established in 1976 as an economic forum, the G7 has evolved into a major global platform addressing:
- Climate change & energy security
- AI & digital governance
- Global health & pandemic preparedness
- Food security & development aid
- Geopolitical tensions & economic resilience
- Supply chain security
India’s Growing Role
Though India is not a G7 member, its participation reflects its growing stature in global affairs. With emerging economies like China, India, and Brazil reshaping the global order. Many argue that forums like the G20 offer broader representation. Yet, the G7 continues to influence global finance, trade, foreign policy, and multilateral institutions such as the IMF and World Bank.
PM Modi’s attendance will give India an opportunity to contribute to key discussions and engage with global leaders at a time of rapid geopolitical shifts.
Diplomatic Significance
This invitation also signals a potential thaw in recent India-Canada relations, which have faced tensions in the past year. Modi’s engagement at the G7 could pave the way for renewed bilateral dialogue on trade, technology, and strategic cooperation.
