The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched another enforcement drive against illegal mango vendors operating along the NDA-Pashan Road, falling under the Kothrud-Bavdhan ward. The action was taken by the civic body’s anti-encroachment department following multiple complaints from residents and commuters about traffic congestion and roadside blockages.
According to PMC officials, unauthorised fruit vendors had set up temporary stalls along this busy stretch, creating safety hazards and obstructing smooth vehicular and pedestrian movement. According to civic officials, these makeshift stalls had reappeared even after several previous crackdowns. This mango season alone has seen four to five such enforcement actions in the same area.
Civic Body Highlights Safety, Congestion Risks
“The NDA-Pashan Road is a major connector for Bavdhan residents. Illegal hawkers block footpaths and endanger pedestrians while disrupting traffic,” said Sandip Khalate from PMC’s anti-encroachment wing. “We will continue action until this corridor is permanently cleared.”
The PMC warned that continued illegal vending poses an inconvenience and public safety risks. Officials have also appealed to citizens to avoid supporting illegal vending by purchasing fruits only from authorised and legal markets. The PMC is exploring stricter measures such as continuous surveillance and heavier penalties to ensure the issue does not resurface.
While many residents welcomed the enforcement, they expressed frustration over its temporary impact.
“We appreciate the action, but without sustained monitoring, these vendors return within days,” said Rutuja Bhise, a local resident of Bavdhan.
PMC has confirmed that similar drives will continue across Pune to curb roadside hawking and ensure safer, more accessible roads for both commuters and pedestrians.
